Welcome!! I’m excited to present to you the very first Girly Kurlz Tutorial! I get asked very often if I have a tutorial for my bows and I haven’t had any until now. I design my own bows and flip flops using my very own templates that I create myself. I’ve used other tutorials in the past, but I can’t help to tweak them to my liking…just like you would do a cooking recipe ;) This tutorial is for the woven heart hair clip. There are many tutorials out there but this is exactly how I create the woven heart hair clip for Girly Kurlz.
Are. You. Ready? Lol, here we go!
*Hot Glue Gun
*Lighter or Candle
*3/8” Grosgrain Ribbon (or satin)
*Rhinestones (I use 34ss hot fix rhinestone)
*1 3/4” alligator clip
First you’ll start by choosing your colors. You can choose 1-4 colors. We’re doing a two-tone heart so we’re going with two colors.
Cut 2 pieces at 4.5” and the other 2 pieces at 4”…one size for each color.
Next, using a lighter, you’ll want to heat seal the ends of your ribbon. All you have to do is take the lighter (or candle) and quickly run it along the edge of the ribbon. This will melt the ends of the ribbon, keeping it from fraying in the future.
Using the 4.5” ribbon, form a “v” shape. Put a dot of glue at the end of the left side ribbon, then place the right side ribbon on top. You should have a “v” shape like in the picture.
*hint: try to match the ends up as close as possible to give it a clean look
Now take the 4” ribbon for the left side (pink) and carefully place it on top like shown. Don’t worry about the top part not lining up, just make sure the bottom is lined up perfectly and glue it down.
Take the last 4” ribbon (purple) and place it on top on the right side. Again, don’t worry about the ribbon not laying straight on top of the bottom ribbon, just make sure the bottom is glued down and lined up perfectly.
*hint: you only need a small dot of glue in the area you are gluing down, otherwise you’ll have a mess!
Take your top ribbon on the right side and fold it down as shown over to the left side. The end will be placed in between the two pieces of ribbon on the left side.
*hint: if you look close to the top purple ribbon, you see that there is no gap in between. The ribbon is touching each other. Glue both sides of the purple ribbon so it can stick to both pink ribbons.
Take the ribbon on the left side over to the right side. Go under the purple, then on top of the purple.
*hint: line up the edges as perfect as possible for a cleaner look
Before going to the next step, place a small dot of glue directly under the areas that are overlapping each other to keep it down.
Take the top right ribbon (purple) and weave it through the pinks. Go under then back on top of the pink.
*hint: before gluing the ribbon in place, make sure it’s sitting snug against the prior ribbon.
After gluing the purple ribbon in place, put a dot of glue in between the pink ribbons directly under the purple area to keep things in place.
*hint: don’t forget to use a small amount of glue or you’ll have a mess.
Take the last (longer pink) ribbon on the left side and weave it through the purple ribbon. Go under, then over, then finish under in between the purple ribbons on the right side.
*hint: don’t forget to keep the ribbon close to each other so they sit snug without any gaps.
This shows the last step. The pink ribbon will sit in between the purple ribbons. Place glue on the front and back of the pink ribbon to set it in place.
Here is your woven heart, no gaps in-between the woven ribbon. The areas that have a red dot show where you should have placed a small amount of glue (underneath) to set it in place.
Time to line your alligator clip...make sure to heat seal the ends of your ribbon.
Open your clip and place glue under the top part of your clip and put your ribbon in place.Place glue across the top of your alligator clip then run the ribbon right on top.
Place a small amount of glue along the areas shown with a red line. No need to put it in the spring area...this will cause the clip to not work properly after the glue sets.
Finish as shown above by gluing that last part of the ribbon to the alligator clip.
This is what we have so far, the woven heart and partially lined alligator clip.
Now it’s time to add your rhinestones!!! Look at that bling!
Glue the clip to your heart. I like to put it vertical with the pinch part at the bottom. You can actually place it to the left or right if you’d prefer.
Lastly, I like to add some felt to the back. This is the finishing touch!! It just looks more professional plus it assures the clip is attached to the woven heart.
